The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has commenced its 55th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the UNIMAK Auditorium, University of Makeni, from 12–13 June 2026. The event is being held under the theme: “Strengthening Sierra Leone’s Economy Through Responsible Journalism.”
The gathering brings together journalists, media practitioners, government officials, development partners, and other stakeholders to discuss the critical role of the media in promoting economic growth, good governance, and democracy. Participants will also deliberate on mechanisms for addressing sexual harassment within the media industry.
Information remains the lifeblood of every society. Through accurate, timely, and credible reporting, the media can help prevent crises, inform citizens, promote accountability, and support national development.
Speaking on behalf of the Sierra Leone Police, Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu emphasized the cordial relationship between the police and the media. He noted that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Sierra Leone Police and SLAJ in 2021 has strengthened cooperation and should be reviewed and amended to reflect current realities. He further highlighted the importance of continuous engagement, collaboration, and training opportunities between both institutions, including sessions involving newly recruited police personnel.
Representing the Ministry of Information, Communication and Civic Education, Madam Kekomba underscored the importance of creating an environment where facts prevail over misinformation and speculation. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting freedom of expression, addressing media-related concerns, promoting transparency, and supporting development initiatives that contribute to public awareness, economic growth, and digital transformation.
In his keynote statement, SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara said the association remains committed to advancing responsible journalism, media freedom, and the welfare of journalists across Sierra Leone. He stressed that journalists play a vital role in national development and called for greater support to strengthen the profession and safeguard freedom of expression.
Delivering the keynote address, Mohamed Alhajie Samoura, Managing Director of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Sierra Leone, highlighted the importance of accuracy and factual reporting in shaping economic development. He stated that responsible journalism is not public relations but a constructive process that informs public discourse and supports national progress. According to him, journalists possess immense power to influence what citizens discuss and what policymakers prioritize, making ethical and responsible reporting essential for economic transformation.
